What are the Effects of Salvia Divinorum?
The question “What are the effects of Salvia?” is a bit tricky to answer. The effects vary heavily dependent on dose, mindset, and most heavily the person themselves. So we’re going to list not only the basic list of common effects, but also a brief description of what might be felt in plain terms.
Positive/Desired Effects of Salvia Divinorum
- Hallucinations!
For most, this is the point. Most active at high doses, visual hallucinations are the most looked forward to of Salvia’s effects. They can be broken up into a few groups.- Visual Alterations - The “fluid” effect. Patterns can shift around as if liquid, generally in a predictable pattern. Also things like walls can stretch and mess up your ability to perceive height and distance. Vivid colors are in play here too.
- Alternate Reality - The best term I’ve heard used to describe this is “the walls fall away”. Odd, irrational conclusions can be reached. This is typically an affect reserved for the highest doses and people are particularly effected by Salvia. A common variation of this involves the user seeing/feeling themselves as though they’re in a tunnel or a wormhole.
- Loss of Coordination - A lot of this is because Salvia can greatly impair your ability to judge distances. Trying to hop a fence for example, becomes a difficult proposition because you can’t accurately judge how high the fence is. Now, that said, this effect is amongst the most short lived, lasting maybe 10 minutes after the user starts to come down.
- Serenity - Some people relax and recede into themselves, feeling content and quiet. The high can be similar to a slightly more dissociative version of the high from a heavy indica. You feel as though you understand the world, and are almost an extension of it.
- Euphoria - Generally felt by those who don’t feel the serenity. Odd things induce uncontrollable laughter. Logic is severely impaired for approximately 20-30 minutes, followed by a distinct tired feeling afterwards. This feeling is often combined with light visual hallucinations/distortions.
Dangers and Risks
The high from Salvia is not inherently dangerous. It is not a party drug or marijuana subsitute. But that said, it severely impairs the depth/distance/reaction time skills that a person needs for any kind of movement. Cars, Mo-Peds, even bikes are definitely a no-go. The high is short lived(the climax ends around 30 minutes in for most), so stay put and have a sitter present. In addition, there’s been a few cases where Salvia has last much longer than expected, and you yourself are not capable of deciding when you are ok to rejoin the outside world. Also, many people(even including experienced trippers) have felt a lot of paranoia with the higher doses that induce things like alternate realities. It’s really a must to have a sober friend if you decide to injest this herb.
Be Safe and Enjoy!
